Latin American movements critique World Social Forum as Pope Leo XIV prepares Peru visit

Latin American social movements have issued a political letter to the International Council of the World Social Forum (WSF) following the 2026 edition held in Benin. The movements expressed deep concern over organizational issues, including restrictions on participation, the expulsion of delegates, obstacles to free movement, and security threats faced by several delegations. They characterized these incidents not as mere organizational errors, but as symptoms of a broader political trend involving the shrinking of democratic spaces and the rise of authoritarianism.

Separately, preparations are underway for the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV to Peru, scheduled for November 11–17, 2026. A macro-regional meeting titled ‘Weaving Voices for Dignity: For Human Rights and the Common Good’ was held on August 13–14, involving indigenous communities and social organizations from nine regions of southern Peru. The event included Andean religious rites, such as offerings to Pachamama, attended by high-ranking clergy including Mgr Jordi Bertomeu and Mgr Lizardo Estrada Herrera.
