Latvia bans imports of books, toys and other goods from Russia and Belarus

Latvia's cabinet approved amendments to a law that prohibit the import of a range of products originating from Russia and Belarus. The ban covers books, newspapers, video games, sports equipment, toys, clothing and footwear, representing about €12.5 million—6.5% of Latvia's imports from the two countries. It applies to direct imports and to imports routed through third‑country exporters, while transit of those goods through Latvian territory to other EU members remains permitted. Exceptions for certain items may be allowed under the draft. The government says the measure is intended to reduce the aggressor states' revenue and to strengthen national security, complementing existing EU sanctions. The final decision will be taken by the Latvian parliament and the impact will be reviewed annually.
