Latvia-Belarus border: Armed men threaten soldiers and sabotage infrastructure

Armed and masked individuals have carried out a series of provocations at the Latvia-Belarus border, involving both the forced movement of migrants and direct sabotage of infrastructure.

Latvian Interior Minister Janis Dombrava reported that a group of armed persons attempted to forcibly escort approximately 20 migrants from Belarus into Latvia, while actively threatening Latvian military personnel. Following this confrontation, a separate group of masked individuals breached Latvian territory. These individuals damaged an electrical distribution box and stole surveillance cameras before retreating back into Belarus.

Latvian authorities, including State Border Guard Chief Guntisas Pujatsas, noted that while the perpetrators might be organized crime members operating with the tacit approval of Minsk, the incidents represent a significant escalation in aggressive and demonstrative provocations. The Latvian military characterized these actions as part of ongoing hybrid threats and intentional provocations aimed at the EU and NATO external borders. Minister Dombrava warned the Belarusian authorities that such incidents could result in serious consequences.
