Latvian authorities have discovered the first migrant tunnel on the country’s border with Belarus near the Silene Border Guard Unit. The underground passage, located approximately ten meters from the border fence, was identified after officials detained 15 migrants who had illegally entered the country.

Latvian officials, including Interior Minister Janis Dombrava, have characterized the situation as a “hybrid threat,” accusing Belarus of orchestrating migration flows to destabilize the European Union. In response, Latvia has launched Operation Vilkatis (Werewolf) to strengthen border security, target smuggling networks, and increase the use of drones and other surveillance technologies.

To prevent further incursions, the Latvian government has ordered the exploration of ground-scanning technology to detect additional tunnels. Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs emphasized the need for regional cooperation, stating that Latvia will work closely with Estonia, Lithuania, and Poland to curb illegal migration and dismantle the criminal networks facilitating these crossings.
