Latvia emerges as top-five importer of Russian grain

Latvia has emerged as one of the top five importers of Russian grain this marketing season, despite strained political relations between the two nations. According to consultancy ProZerno, Latvia imported 431,700 metric tons of Russian grain between July and October.

This shift comes as Russia redirects its export routes following the stalling of shipments through the Azov-Black Sea basin in mid-August. Deep-water Baltic ports have become a primary outlet for Russian wheat, with the Baltic route accounting for 65% of Russian grain exports in September. While Estonia has banned the transit of Russian grain through its territory, shipments continue to flow through Baltic ports, primarily in Latvia.

Globally, Iran remains the largest buyer of Russian grain, importing 1.716 million tons of barley and corn during the same period. Other major importers include Egypt, which took in 1.35 million tons, as well as Azerbaijan and Nigeria.
