Latvia enters meteorological autumn

Meteorological autumn officially began in Latvia on September 10. According to data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, the season is defined by the average daily temperature remaining below +15 degrees Celsius for at least five consecutive days.

While temperatures reached +27 degrees on September 9, the subsequent cooling met the criteria for the seasonal shift. Historically, the average start date for meteorological autumn in Latvia between 1991 and 2020 was August 31. This year's onset follows a period of significant fluctuation, including an unusually early start in 2022 and a record late start on October 4 in 2023.

Although initial forecasts suggested a warm and wet autumn, recent data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts indicates an increasing possibility of drier and cooler periods during the season.
