Lithuania & Latvia 2026: Cyclones and seasonal transitions
Overview
Lithuania is experiencing highly dynamic weather as the summer season concludes and transitions into autumn. Following a period of variable cloudiness, an atmospheric front moved across the country, bringing rain, potential thunderstorms, and wind gusts. While the final days of summer were forecasted to remain relatively pleasant, the transition into September brought lighter rain and cooler temperatures.
The weather became increasingly unstable due to a series of approaching cyclones. Cyclone Sina brought rain and light thunderstorms, followed by cyclone Tessa on Tuesday, September 1, which brought a cold atmospheric front and intensifying afternoon thunderstorms.
By early September, weather patterns shifted as anticyclone Ulrich brought drier and calmer conditions from the west and southwest, even as cyclone Vilja moved toward the north and northeast. This led to a period of temporary warming on Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures rising between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius.
This warming trend intensified into an unseasonably warm spell, with temperatures potentially reaching 23–28 degrees Celsius. Meteorologist Gytis Valaika noted that this could become the warmest September day on record, approaching the national record of 29 degrees set in 2019. Following this peak, forecasts indicate a shift toward cooler, more autumnal conditions with intermittent rain and thunderstorms, with daytime temperatures settling between 16–21 degrees Celsius. Long-term projections suggest the second half of September may remain approximately 1.5 degrees warmer than the climate norm, with precipitation potentially reaching 40 percent above the norm.
In Latvia, following the severe storm between August 21 and August 24, cleanup efforts remain ongoing. Between August 28 and August 31, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) responded to 182 calls, including 45 firefighting operations and 89 rescue missions.
