Lithuania & Latvia 2026 heat, storms and fire emergencies
Entities: Lithuania · Cyclone Floora · Sweden · E. Latvėnaitė
Overview
Mid‑June heat pushed temperatures to 30‑35 °C across Lithuania and triggered orange‑level warnings in Latvia. A warm air mass on 12 July kept daytime highs at 25‑30 °C in Lithuania and 22‑24 °C on the Curonian Spit, with intermittent showers, thunder, lightning and gusts of 15‑20 m s⁻¹ affecting western areas. Health officials warned of dehydration, especially for children, the elderly and those on antihypertensive medication, and set work‑site temperature limits. Latvia’s State Fire and Rescue Service logged 49 emergency calls on 16‑17 July, including a fatal house fire in Krāslava and a 3 000 m² hay‑stack blaze in Vidzeme. Lithuania issued a yellow thunderstorm warning on 18 July and announced two successive cyclones – Cyclone “Cerry II” and a second low‑pressure system – bringing rain, thunder, gusts up to 20 m s⁻¹ and night‑time lows of 10‑15 °C. Forecasts for 19 July expected heavy rain, wind gusts of 15‑20 m s⁻¹ along the coast and cooler daytime highs of 17‑22 °C, disrupting travel and outdoor activities. Latvia’s fire services remained busy, handling 206 calls from 17‑21 July – ranging from a nine‑storey apartment fire in Riga to multiple barn, wall and dry‑grass fires, river rescues and road‑traffic accidents that produced nine injuries. On 22‑23 July the service recorded 41 emergency calls in a 24‑hour period: eleven fire‑fighting incidents, nineteen rescues and eleven false alarms. Detailed incidents included a gas‑pipe fire in Daugmales parish, a tree rescue in Saulkrasti, the discovery of two missing persons in Zvārde forest, a fatal drowning near Saldus and a rescue from a mud‑filled tractor pit in Kazdanga. The same period saw 127 road‑traffic accidents, 19 injuries and 429 administrative traffic violations.
