Baltic states brace for severe cyclone and extreme weather

A powerful cyclone is moving through the Baltic region, bringing extreme weather conditions to Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania.

In Latvia, a red alert has been issued for central regions, including Riga, Jelgava, and the Vidzeme coast. Authorities warn of heavy rainfall that could cause widespread flooding of properties, transport infrastructure, and agricultural fields. Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 30 m/s, particularly along the coast. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors to mitigate risks to life and property.

Estonia is under an orange level 2 warning due to intense rain and strong winds. Rainfall is projected to reach between 50-70 mm, with some areas seeing up to 90 mm within 24 hours. Wind gusts could reach 30 m/s in the Gulf of Riga area. The utility company Elektrilevi has stated it is on high alert to address potential power outages caused by falling trees.

Lithuania is also bracing for the cyclone, with meteorologists predicting dangerous wind gusts of up to 30 m/s and heavy precipitation. Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and prepare for potential disruptions to electricity and water supplies.
