Cyclone brings extreme wind, rain, and fatalities to Baltic

Overview

By late September, Latvia continued to experience significant rainfall, with most observation stations exceeding monthly precipitation norms. As of early October, Latvia is preparing for further unsettled weather as a large cyclone approaches from the northwest.

A new strong cyclone is expected to bring severe weather to Latvia on Friday, October 9. Forecasters predict intense wind gusts, particularly along the western coast of Kurzeme, where speeds could reach between 24 and 29 meters per second. In response, the electricity distribution company Sadales tīkls has entered a state of heightened operational readiness, warning that falling trees or branches could cause outages. Hundreds of electricians are prepared to work through the night to repair potential damage.
