Latvia issues severe thunderstorm warning for Aug 1‑2, 2026

On the evening of Friday 1 August 2026 and into Saturday 2 August, the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre together with the State Fire and Rescue Service issued a public warning for a severe thunderstorm across much of the country.

The warning describes intense rain, hail and wind gusts of 15‑17 m/s, with possible large hailstones and strong gusts that could break branches, damage power lines and cause localized flooding. Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid open areas such as forests, and be prepared for possible power or service interruptions. The forecast also notes a high UV index and heat, increasing health risks for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, infants and people with chronic conditions.
