Latvia PM Rebukes Interior Minister for Uncoordinated Letter to Spain

On 4 August 2026, Latvia’s interior minister Jānis Dombrava sent a letter to Spain concerning the recent Ceuta border incident, in which tens of thousands of migrants briefly entered from Morocco. In the letter he expressed solidarity, offered technical assistance and warned that illegal migrants must not be legalised, describing the situation as a broader EU border‑security challenge. The tone of the letter was criticised as “arrogant”.

Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs publicly reprimanded Dombrava, stating that future communications with foreign states must be coordinated with the foreign ministry. Kulbergs highlighted that the issue touches on hybrid attacks and EU security, and urged that diplomatic messages be aligned to avoid misunderstandings. While the Spanish government gave a neutral or positive official response, unofficial sources indicated displeasure with the letter’s tone.
