Latvia reports armed provocations and sabotage at Belarus border

Latvian officials have reported an escalation in border tensions with Belarus, involving armed provocations and acts of sabotage. On Monday, masked and armed men attempted to escort 20 undocumented migrants across the border into Latvia. Latvian Interior Minister Janis Dombrava stated that these escorts, positioned on the Belarusian side, issued threats to soldiers and actively drove the group toward the Latvian border.

Following this attempt, masked individuals entered Latvian territory, where they destroyed an electrical box and stole surveillance cameras before returning to Belarus. Latvian authorities have characterized these actions as sabotage orchestrated by Belarus.

Experts note a significant rise in border violations. Bartosz Chmielewski of the Centre for Eastern Studies reported that violations in September and October alone reached 12,000, a figure equal to the total recorded for the entire previous year. The situation at the border has reportedly been deteriorating since May.
