Latvia strengthens border security with Polish support

Latvia-Belarus border Polish Border Guard irregular migration border security VILKATIS operation

Polish border guards are providing theoretical and practical support to the Latvian State Border Guard at the Latvia-Belarus border from October 19 to November 1. This cooperation, based on an agreement signed on October 2, aims to enhance public safety, prevent criminal activities, and strengthen cross-border crime fighting.

Latvia continues to face significant irregular migration pressure. On October 20, authorities thwarted 32 attempts to illegally cross the Latvia-Belarus border. Since the beginning of the year, 12,254 people have been detained for illegal border crossings. In the Madona region, a Latvian citizen was detained for attempting to transport seven individuals without valid travel documents in a Volkswagen.

To address the hybrid threat of instrumentalized migration from Belarus, Latvia has implemented the 'VILKATIS' operation. The government has also extended the reinforced border protection regime at the Belarusian border through the end of the year.
