Latvian Fire Service Handles 49 Emergency Calls Across Regions

During the night of 16‑17 July, Latvia’s State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) recorded 49 emergency calls, comprising 15 fire‑fighting incidents, 23 rescue operations and 11 false alarms. In the Latgale region, firefighters responded to a house fire in Krāslava that engulfed a 70 m² dwelling and a nearby vehicle; a person was found dead. Later that night a separate blaze damaged a house façade in Ādaži parish, prompting evacuation of one resident.

In the Vidzeme region, eight calls involved fires in dry grass, vehicle collisions, a hay‑stack blaze of 3,000 m², and other incidents such as a fallen tree on a road. Rescue crews also dealt with a gas leak‑induced smoke accumulation in a cellar. Across the country, authorities logged 149 road‑traffic accidents during the same period, resulting in 14 injuries and the issuance of 434 administrative violation notices, alongside several criminal proceedings for driving under the influence of alcohol or suspected drugs.

Overall, the VUGD’s coordinated response covered multiple municipalities, extinguishing fires, rescuing individuals, and managing related traffic and safety violations.
