Latvian Fire Service Handles Fatal Drowning and Fire Incidents

From 30 July 06:30 to 31 July 06:30, Latvia’s State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) logged 47 emergency calls—15 for fires, 19 for rescues and 13 false alarms. A notable fire broke out in a two‑storey apartment on Alsunga Street in Riga; five residents were evacuated and the blaze was extinguished by 10:38 a.m. . In Staiceles parish, Limbaži municipality, a person who had fallen into a lake was found three metres from shore but was pronounced dead after being brought to the shore.

VUGD also rescued missing individuals in forested areas: a man was located in Vērēmu parish, Rēzekne region, using a quad bike, and another was extracted from the woods of Baldone, Ķekava municipality, after being guided by a tanker’s audible signal. Following the incidents, VUGD warned the public to exercise extra caution when swimming, especially under the influence of alcohol, and to carry charged mobile phones and avoid venturing alone into forests or wetlands.
