Latvian insurers provide coverage for 33 people missing in Nepal

The Latvian Insurers Association (LAA) has confirmed that one of its insurers holds group travel insurance for 33 people reported missing in Nepal. Of this group, 28 are Latvian citizens, while five are citizens of other countries.

An additional six travelers have travel insurance through two other insurers, with three individuals covered by each. Insurers are currently coordinating with the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to monitor the situation and provide support as soon as possible.

LAA clarified that insurance coverage remains active regarding the consequences of the specific event—flooding in Nepal—as the incident occurred during the policy period. This means expenses and benefits related to the event will be covered even if the policy term expires. However, the association noted that being missing without trace is not itself an insurance event; coverage for medical assistance and repatriation applies if the individuals are found alive, while death benefits are subject to verification by competent authorities.
