Latvian citizens affected by Nepal glacier outburst

Following a glacier lake outburst on August 26, which triggered massive water and mud flows across Nepal and China, Latvian authorities have been monitoring the status of their citizens in the region. The disaster has resulted in at least 900 deaths and thousands of missing persons. Initial reports from the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that 39 tourists were being tracked, with 28 individuals reported unreachable due to a lack of communication infrastructure. While the Nepal Tourism Department identified six missing citizens, Latvian officials worked to update these figures, noting that many travelers had not registered with the Consular Register. By late August, the number of confirmed missing Latvian citizens was updated to 33, with three individuals confirmed safe. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs also identified 33 Latvian nationals near the Gyirong border crossing, though their exact locations remain unknown. As of early September, a representative from the Consular Department has been deployed to Nepal to facilitate communication with local authorities and assist with potential repatriations. President Edgars Rinkēvičs has noted the gravity of the situation, where rescue operations are reportedly more difficult than in Europe. In response to the crisis, the Latvian government is preparing to provide humanitarian and financial assistance to Nepal, including a potential 100,000 euro contribution to the Prime Minister of Nepal’s disaster relief fund. Latvia also plans to send mobile freezers to assist in the preservation of remains, alongside DNA testing kits and materials to aid identification efforts. On September 7, the Latvian Insurers Association (LAA) confirmed that one of its insurers holds group travel insurance for 33 people reported missing in Nepal, consisting of 28 Latvian citizens and five citizens of other countries. An additional six travelers are covered through two other insurers.
