Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs tracks 39 tourists in Nepal
The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is monitoring the status of 39 Latvian tourists in Nepal following a recent disaster. Of these, 34 are Latvian nationals traveling in two separate tourist groups. Relatives have reported being unable to contact 28 individuals since the event occurred.
While the Nepal Tourism Department has identified six Latvian citizens as missing, the Latvian Consular Department is working to update this list. Efforts to gather information are being hindered by a lack of communication infrastructure, as the affected region currently lacks telephone and internet access. Additionally, most travelers in the groups had not registered with the Consular Register, which complicates tracking efforts; only one individual traveler who had registered has been confirmed safe.
Latvia’s Honorary Consul in Nepal is coordinating with Nepalese authorities, including the Minister of Home Affairs, to provide lists of nationals and obtain updates. Rescue operations are ongoing, with survivors being gathered in the neighboring province of Nuwakot. The Latvian Embassy in China is also monitoring the situation.
