Latvian Sprinter Oskars Grava Sets Personal 200m Record at Valmiera Championships
The 2026 Latvian Athletics Championships were held on 25‑26 July at Jāņa Daliņa Stadium in Valmiera. Sprinter Oskars Grava won the men’s 200 m with a personal best of 20.49 seconds, falling just 0.08 seconds short of Sergejs Inšakovs’s 1996 Olympic national record. Grava also took the 100 m title in 10.56 seconds, marking his third consecutive national win at that distance and his fifth overall 200 m championship.
Women’s titles went to Gunta Vaičule (200 m, 22.94 s) and Ieva Malnača (100 m, 11.94 s). Patriks Gailums claimed the men’s discus with a throw of 77.02 m, while Anete Sietiņa won the women’s discus, breaking 60 m for the first time this season. Junior athlete Brenda Džiliana Apsīte set a new Latvian U20 triple‑jump record of 13.90 m. The championships also featured world vice‑champion Anete Sietiņa, sprint legend Gunta Vaičule, veteran Elvijs Misāns, and other top Latvian athletes, many of whom are seeking qualification for the upcoming European Championships in Birmingham.
