Latvian athletics progression at European Championships

Overview

Latvian sprinter Oskars Grava began a successful competitive period at the Latvian Athletics Championships in Valmiera, winning the men’s 200m with a personal best of 20.49 seconds and securing the 100m title.

At the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, Grava reached the 200m final. He finished fifth with a time of 20.28 seconds, though the result will not count as a Latvian record because the wind speed of +2.5 m/s exceeded the allowable limit of +2.0 m/s. The gold medal was won by Germany’s Owen Ansah.

Javelin thrower Patriks Gailums secured a bronze medal at the championships. His winning throw of 82.97 meters, achieved during his third attempt, narrowly beat fourth-place finisher David Vegner by just one centimeter. The gold medal went to Germany’s Julian Weber (90.40 meters) and silver to Niks Tams (83.76 meters). This marks Gailums’ fourth appearance at the European Championships.

Latvia was represented by seven athletes across four disciplines. Other participants included javelin throwers Anete Sietiņa and Krišjānis Suntažs, hammer thrower Valters Kreišs, and walkers Raivo Saulgriezis and Modra Liepiņa, though they did not advance to final rounds.
