Latvia's Ministry of Economics proposes expanded heating subsidies

The Latvian Ministry of Economics is proposing to expand state support for household heating system modernization. Minister of Economics Viktors Valainis suggests reinstating co-financing options for modern, energy-efficient wood-burning boilers.

The proposal aims to strengthen long-term energy security for households by diversifying heating options. This move comes in response to volatility in the wood pellet market, which is currently influenced by rising demand, raw material costs, weather conditions, and existing supply obligations.

By including wood boilers alongside existing support for pellets and heat pumps, the Ministry intends to reduce household dependence on a single fuel type and increase resilience against price and supply fluctuations. The Ministry emphasizes a technologically neutral approach, prioritizing energy efficiency and emission standards to ensure heating remains accessible and predictable for residents.
