Latvia's PTAC investigates safety of Squishy Dumpling toys
The Consumer Rights Protection Centre (PTAC) in Latvia has launched a market surveillance investigation into the popular 'Squishy Dumpling' toys. The action follows multiple consumer complaints regarding a specific chemical aroma, raising concerns about potential safety risks.
This investigation is prompted by similar safety issues in other countries, such as the United Kingdom, where the toy was removed from the market due to benzene concentrations exceeding safety limits. PTAC has collected samples from various manufacturers to test for benzene and 18 other chemical substances in a laboratory setting.
While initial laboratory results have not yet shown any non-compliance, PTAC noted that a chemical scent does not automatically indicate a safety violation. The agency also conducted on-site inspections of physical stores and reviewed online marketplaces. While physical store labeling appeared compliant during initial checks, PTAC identified information discrepancies in online listings and is currently communicating with distributors. Several online retailers have already removed the product from their platforms.
