Laura Dahlmeier remembered on first death anniversary
Former biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier died on 28 July 2025 when a large rock struck her while rappelling on the 6 096‑metre Laila Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range. Her body could not be recovered and remains buried in the mountain.
A year later her family and friends marked the first anniversary quietly at the Laura‑Dahlmeier‑Park in Garmisch‑Partenkirchen, a park named for her in February and featuring a stone from the Ferchenbach chosen by her mother Susi. Candles, flowers and a commemorative plaque were laid out, but no public ceremony was held. Father Andreas Dahlmeier said the family preferred a private gathering. Former teammate Maren Hammerschmidt recalled their last phone call, in which Dahlmeier spoke of an upcoming Zugspitze hike and her planned climb of Laila Peak. Dahlmeier was a two‑time Olympic gold‑medalist and seven‑time world champion, later working as a ZDF biathlon expert.
