Overview

Former Olympic biathlete Laura Dahlmeier died on 28 July 2025 while abseiling Laila Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range, a rock strike at roughly 5 700 m killing her instantly. Her climbing partner Marina Krauss survived and summoned rescue teams. Days before the accident, Spanish alpinist María Martín warned Dahlmeier and Krauss that base‑camp conditions were “dangerous, impossible”, showing photos of frequent avalanches and stonefall.

Rescue experts Alan Rousseau, Thomas Huber and Ted McCrea reached the site but, faced with ongoing rockfall, unstable weather and Dahlmeier’s written wish that no one risk their lives to recover her, they abandoned body‑retrieval. The family later confirmed the decision.

The first anniversary on 28 July 2026 was marked privately at the Laura‑Dahlmeier‑Park in Garmisch‑Partenkirchen, a memorial inaugurated by her parents and incorporating a stone from the Ferchenbach chosen by her mother.

ServusTV’s documentary “Laura Dahlmeier … einen Schritt zu weit”, aired on 27 July 2026, includes testimonies from Martín, Rousseau and others, detailing the warning signs, the rescue effort and the choice to leave her remains unrecovered.
