Laura Fuertes wins historic silver at European Boxing Championships

Spanish boxer Laura Fuertes has secured a historic silver medal at the European Elite Boxing Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. This achievement marks the first time a Spanish female boxer has won a continental medal at this level.

Competing in the -51 kg category, the 27-year-old from Asturias reached the final after defeating Daina Moorehouse of Ireland in the quarter-finals (4-1) and Maxi Klötzer of Germany in the semi-finals (3-2). In the final match, Fuertes faced Turkey’s Hatice Akbas, a former world champion and Olympic silver medalist. Akbas won the bout by unanimous decision, controlling the second and third rounds to secure the gold.

Fuertes’ success comes after a challenging period involving physical setbacks, including an elbow injury and surgery for a fractured finger nine months ago.
