Poland faces rising debt and political disputes over budget and US bases

Poland faces significant fiscal and political challenges. According to the government's 2027–2030 debt management strategy, the public debt-to-GDP ratio is projected to exceed the 55% cautionary threshold in 2028, potentially reaching 59.2% by 2029. This trigger may activate austerity mechanisms under the Public Finance Act, including potential freezes on public sector wages and weaker pension indexation.

Simultaneously, a budgetary dispute has emerged regarding the Constitutional Tribunal. President Bogdan Święczkowski reported that the 2027 budget draft excludes the Tribunal's planned 78.05 million PLN budget, citing a lack of a formal resolution from the judges' assembly due to a lack of quorum.

Political tensions are also high regarding US military presence. While Adam Bielan accused the government of sabotaging negotiations for a permanent US base between September and March, Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz denied these claims. Prime Minister Donald Tusk clarified that a March meeting between Kosiniak-Kamysz and Donald Trump focused on domestic Polish politics rather than US military bases.
