U.S. law enforcement ramps up impaired driving patrols for Labor Day

Law enforcement agencies across multiple U.S. states are launching intensified impaired-driving enforcement campaigns ahead of the Labor Day holiday. Participating in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” initiative, agencies in Arkansas, California, New York, Texas, Utah, and Wisconsin are increasing patrols and sobriety checkpoints through September 7.

In New York, officials are utilizing both marked vehicles and concealed identity traffic enforcement vehicles to identify violators. Utah is deploying 39 agencies to work over 245 additional DUI enforcement shifts. In Arkansas, state and local police are focusing on detecting impaired drivers during the busy travel period, while Texas is highlighting the high rate of alcohol-related fatalities during the holiday weekend.

Authorities are urging motorists to plan for safe transportation in advance, recommending the use of rideshare services, designated drivers, or public transit. The campaigns aim to reduce traffic fatalities, noting that impaired driving significantly contributes to crash deaths during the summer and holiday periods.
