Colombia: President De la Espriella reports major security crackdown
Colombian President Abelardo De la Espriella has announced a significant security crackdown, reporting 22,462 arrests and the seizure of approximately 93 tons of narcotics and 2,360 firearms since assuming office on August 7, 2026. The administration has also issued Decree 1368 to lift previous prohibitions on firearm possession and carrying.
In response to reports of criminal activity within the prison system, the President ordered the immediate transfer of FARC dissident leader alias ‘Firu’ to a maximum-security facility in Santander to prevent unauthorized communications. Additionally, 120 inmates were transferred from Buenaventura to high-security prisons to disrupt criminal coordination.
Separately, former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez has requested that the Constitutional Court resolve a jurisdictional conflict between the Prosecutor General's Office and the House Accusation Commission regarding his legal status. Uribe is seeking a definitive ruling on investigations into alleged paramilitary links and massacres in Antioquia during the 1990s, stating he wishes to avoid a “reputational limbo.”
