Lazio approves community health centre at Rebibbia prison

The regional council of Lazio voted on 23 July to approve a protocol establishing a “Casa della Comunità” health centre inside the Rebibbia prison in Rome. The project is funded with more than €3.6 million provided by the region, ASL Roma 2 and the Department of Prison Administration (DAP), which will also make the prison’s “Fabbricato A” available free of charge.

The centre, slated to become operational in August 2025, will extend the national health service model (DM 77/2022) to detainees and prison staff, offering primary care, specialist services and substance‑use treatment. Regional president Francesco Rocca said: “La Casa della Comunità di Rebibbia è un atto di civiltà, voluto dalla nostra Giunta, non solo a tutela dei detenuti, ma anche di chi opera all’interno della struttura.” The initiative aims to improve health equity, reduce external transfers and support inmates’ social reintegration.
