Rebibbia prison community health centre

In late July 2026, the Lazio regional council approved a protocol to convert part of Rebibbia prison in Rome into a "Casa della Comunità" – a community health centre offering primary, specialist and substance‑use treatment to detainees and prison staff. The project, funded with more than €3.6 million from the regional budget, the ASL Roma 2 health authority and the Department of Prison Administration, will use the prison’s “Fabbricato A” building at no charge. Scheduled to open in August 2025, the centre aims to extend Italy’s national health service model to the correctional setting, improve health equity, reduce hospital transfers, and support inmates’ social reintegration. Regional president Francesco Rocca and union leader Antonio Magi highlighted the initiative as a civil act that safeguards detainees’ constitutional right to health and could serve as a replicable model for other facilities.
