Lazio coastal towns impose swimming bans over temporary water contamination

The regional environmental agency ARPA Lazio reported that most of the Lazio coastline meets water‑quality standards, but several short‑term contamination spikes were detected in May. Elevated microbiological levels prompted temporary bans on bathing in specific sections of the coasts of Ostia, Torvaianica, Ardea and Fiumicino.

Permanent restrictions also remain near river mouths and canal outlets, including the Tevere estuary, the Canale dei Pescatori, and various local fossi, where hygiene and hydraulic safety concerns prohibit swimming. While follow‑up tests returned to acceptable levels within a few days, officials warned that contamination could recur, urging the public to avoid the identified zones until conditions improve.
