Lübeck celebrates 125 years of Thomas Mann’s Buddenbrooks

Lübeck is marking the 125th anniversary of the publication of Thomas Mann’s world-renowned novel, ‘Buddenbrooks. The Decline of a Family’, which was first released on October 13, 1901.

To celebrate the milestone, a special exhibition titled ‘Family Affairs. 125 Years of Buddenbrooks’ will open on October 29 at the St. Annen-Museum. This location serves as a temporary venue while the Buddenbrookhaus museum remains closed for renovations, a project expected to continue until 2030.

Caren Heuer, director of the Buddenbrookhaus, noted that the novel remains highly relevant, exploring themes of family expectations and societal pressure through characters like Thomas and Toni Buddenbrook. The anniversary celebrations will also include readings and various other cultural activities.
