Lübeck Buddenbrooks 125th anniversary celebrations

Overview

The city of Lübeck is marking the 125th anniversary of the publication of Thomas Mann’s novel, ‘Buddenbrooks’.

Initial celebrations include the ‘Family Affairs. 125 Years of Buddenbrooks’ exhibition at the St. Annen-Museum, which serves as a temporary venue while the Buddenbrookhaus museum undergoes renovations until 2030. Caren Heuer, director of the Buddenbrookhaus, stated the novel remains relevant for its exploration of “family expectations and societal pressure”.

Further commemorative activities include a Playmobil model of the fictional Buddenbrook house created by artist Oliver Schaffer. Additionally, the 68th Nordic Film Days Lübeck will host a retrospective titled ‘Buddenbrooks p:reloaded’ from November 4 to 8, featuring eleven films that examine generational family sagas and Scandinavian literary influences on Mann’s work.
