Lübeck environmental groups launch cleanup and forest protection protests

Local environmental initiatives are gaining momentum in Lübeck, Germany, through both community action and public demonstrations. The Grüne Jugend and the Bündnis 90/Die Grünen Lübeck have organized a mass litter collection event scheduled for September 27, 2026, near the St. Lorenz sports center. This initiative aims to combat littering and promote urban cleanliness, with specific focus on reducing cigarette butt pollution in streets, parks, and beaches.

Separately, approximately 260 people participated in a demonstration to protect local urban forests. Organized by the Bündnis ‘Lübecker Stadtwald retten!’ and the Kaltenhof citizens' initiative, the protest demanded that infrastructure projects, such as the planned power line and road bypasses, be rerouted to avoid clearing valuable forest areas. The demonstration received support via video message from forest expert Peter Wohlleben and verbal backing from Lorenz Gösta Beutin, chairman of the Bundestag Committee on the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety.
