LDC Group unifies climate priorities ahead of COP31

Forty-four Least Developed Countries (LDCs) have reached a consensus on a unified position ahead of the COP31 climate summit, scheduled to take place in Antalya, Turkey, this November. Following strategic discussions in Dili, Timor-Leste, the group emphasized the urgent need for immediate emission reductions to maintain the global temperature limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius.

A primary focus for the LDC group is the acceleration of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), supported by adequate resources. The group is calling for a significant increase in climate finance that is stable, predictable, and accessible. Specifically, LDCs are advocating for support to be provided through grants rather than loans to avoid exacerbating existing public debt crises in developing nations.

Additional priorities include implementing the Global Goal on Adaptation and securing resources for loss and damage mitigation. The group also stresses the importance of a just energy transition that respects the development needs and energy access requirements of least developed nations.
