LDC group climate negotiation priorities

The Least Developed Countries (LDC) group, representing 44 states, convened in Dili, Timor-Leste, to establish a unified negotiating position for the upcoming COP31 summit in Antalya, Turkey. Initial discussions focused on reaching a common stance regarding climate finance from developed nations, adaptation strategies, and addressing losses and damages caused by climate change.

Following these strategic discussions, the group reached a consensus on several key priorities. The LDCs emphasized the necessity of immediate emission reductions to maintain the 1.5 degrees Celsius global temperature limit. Central to their position is the call for stable, predictable, and accessible climate finance, specifically advocating for support through grants rather than loans to prevent worsening public debt crises.

Other unified priorities include the acceleration of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), the implementation of the Global Goal on Adaptation, and ensuring a just energy transition that respects the development and energy access needs of these nations.
