Kosovo political crisis deepens as LDK deputies reject presidential candidate

A political crisis is unfolding in Kosovo following a rift within the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) regarding the nomination of Bekim Sejdiu as a consensus presidential candidate. While Albin Kurti, the acting Prime Minister and leader of Vetëvendosje (VV), maintains that the political agreement between VV and LDK remains valid, the consensus has been undermined by six LDK deputies who have declared they will not support Sejdiu.

LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku warned that this internal division could potentially force the country into new parliamentary elections. In response, Kurti described the dissent as a “heavy blow” to the agreement but expressed optimism that institutional stability could still be achieved. Some LDK members, such as Liza Gashi, noted that the dissenting deputies claim their issue is not with the candidate himself, but with Albin Kurti.

Former LDK leader Isa Mustafa defended the six dissenting deputies, describing them as respected, educated individuals who have remained loyal to the party. Meanwhile, the political deadlock has raised concerns about the timely constitution of the Assembly and the formation of a new government, with opposition parties accusing the current leadership of obstructing state functions.
