Kosovo political tensions and presidential candidacy

Overview

The political crisis in Kosovo has deepened as the rift within the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) persists. While LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku maintains that the decision to support Bekim Sejdiu as a consensus candidate was made by the party’s highest bodies to ensure stability, the internal rebellion remains unresolved.

Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti of the Vetëvendosje Movement (LVV) has asserted that the political agreement between LVV and LDK remains valid despite the dissent from six LDK deputies: Avdullah Hoti, Hykmete Bajrami, Arben Gashi, Armend Zemaj, Kujtim Shala, and Janina Ymeri. Kurti reported that Sejdiu currently holds approximately 74 potential votes, which falls short of the 80 votes required for election. He has described the dissent as a “heavy blow” to the agreement and continues to accuse the dissenting deputies of acting irresponsibly.

Growing suspicion surrounds the motivations behind the consensus. LDK deputy Doarsa Kica-Xhelili suggested that Kurti may have accepted the candidacy to exploit existing fractures within the LDK. Deputy Paris Guri further attributed the dissent to internal political struggles involving Abdixhiku, noting that the party’s current number of deputies prevents the proposal of alternative candidates.

As the Parliament prepares for its constitutive session, the impasse extends to broader legislative concerns. The session is expected to address territorial reform, electoral reform, and judicial salary disputes, though opposition members have criticized the majority for attempting to pass significant reforms, such as territorial restructuring, without broad consensus. The Institute for Kosovo Justice (IKD) has called for the immediate constitution of the Assembly, warning that delays in meeting constitutional deadlines must not be used to justify continued institutional dysfunction.
