Lebanese Christians displaced from Tyre amid intensified Israeli strikes

After a cease‑fire between Hezbollah and Israel in April, Darine Al Jouny Safadi and her family returned to the historic Christian quarter of Tyre in southern Lebanon. Within weeks, Israeli forces ordered the evacuation of the district and resumed heavy bombardment, claiming Hezbollah militants were present, prompting the family to flee north for a second time.

The Greek Orthodox Archbishop of Tyre, Elias Kfoury, said the destruction was unprecedented, estimating over $100 million in damage to churches and antiquities. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that residents could return, but many still feel unsafe. Israeli officials maintain the strikes target only military objectives and deny intentional harm to civilians or heritage sites. The conflict has killed more than 3,600 people in Lebanon and displaced roughly one‑million residents, a fifth of the population.
