Lebanese Parliament holds accountability session for Salam government
The Lebanese Parliament is holding a two-day session on September 15-16 to hold Prime Minister Nawaf Salam’s government accountable for its general policies. The session is expected to be highly contentious, with over 55 deputies requesting to speak.
Key points of debate include the economic crisis, with Prime Minister Salam noting that the costs of recent wars could exceed $27 billion when accounting for lost investment, brain drain, and asset devaluation. Legislators are also expected to clash over the ‘Framework Agreement’ and the ‘Memorandum of Understanding,’ specifically regarding security in Southern Lebanon and the control of weapons by Hezbollah.
Political tensions are high, with heated exchanges occurring between members of the ‘Loyalty to the Resistance’ bloc and opposition deputies. Discussions are expected to focus on the state's failure to manage the electricity sector, rising inflation, and the necessity of restricting all weapons to the Lebanese Army. Some deputies are calling for the state to assert full authority over its territory following recent military developments in the south.
