Lebanese government sovereignty and reform efforts
Overview
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has focused on strengthening state sovereignty and implementing domestic reforms. In late August, Salam visited Tyre in southern Lebanon to inspect the Lebanese Army’s South Litani Sector. During this visit, he asserted that military presence is a “vital manifestation of state presence” necessary for reclaiming sovereignty and authority. He pledged to seek international support to modernize military equipment and improve soldiers' living conditions.
By early September, Salam shifted focus toward addressing political criticisms and economic stability. He clarified the division of responsibilities between the Cabinet and the Foreign Ministry, noting his coordination with Foreign Minister Raji for upcoming international engagements. Additionally, Salam addressed the status of financial reforms, highlighting three legislative projects—banking secrecy, banking reform, and the financial gap law—aimed at maintaining credibility with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
