Lebanese Parliament renews confidence in Nawaf Salam government

The Lebanese Parliament has renewed its confidence in Prime Minister Nawaf Salam’s government following a two-day session dedicated to reviewing the cabinet’s performance. The vote concluded with 68 deputies supporting the government, while 12 voted against and two abstained. The session was notable for the absence of the ‘Loyalty to the Resistance’ bloc, who left the chamber prior to the vote.

In a speech following the vote, Prime Minister Salam addressed the current political and security landscape. He clarified that the tripartite framework agreement reached in June under U.S. sponsorship is a political framework for negotiations rather than a formal legal treaty. He noted that while the agreement aims for a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces and the restoration of Lebanese sovereignty, the desired results have not yet been fully realized as attacks continue.

Salam also discussed regional relations, stating that the government seeks a relationship with Syria based on mutual respect for sovereignty and non-interference. He mentioned that approximately 700,000 Syrian nationals have returned to their country through coordinated government plans. The Prime Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to preventing Lebanon from becoming an arena for regional conflicts and focused on rebuilding national unity and state authority.
