Lebanese PM Nawaf Salam seeks international support in New York

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has engaged in a series of high-level diplomatic meetings in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. His discussions focused on several critical priorities for Lebanon, including the necessity of a full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory and the cessation of military attacks to ensure regional stability.

A central theme of the meetings was the future of international presence in southern Lebanon. Salam emphasized the need to prevent a security vacuum following the conclusion of the UNIFIL mandate, advocating for a continued international presence under a UN Security Council mandate to maintain monitoring and communication.

Salam also met with leaders including King Abdullah II of Jordan and Finnish President Alexander Stubb to discuss strengthening the Lebanese Army and internal security forces. Additionally, the Prime Minister highlighted Lebanon's commitment to state sovereignty, the centralization of weapons under state control, and the pursuit of economic recovery through regional connectivity in energy and transport sectors. Efforts are also being directed toward supporting the return of displaced citizens and reconstruction in affected areas.
