Lebanese President Joseph Aoun meets President Trump in Washington

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun arrived in Washington at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump, becoming the first Lebanese head of state to visit the White House since 2009. The agenda includes a face‑to‑face meeting with Trump and sessions with senior U.S. officials, notably Secretary of State Marco Rubio, to present a written plan for disarming the Iran‑backed Hezbollah militia and to press Israel to withdraw its forces from the occupied southern Lebanon security zone.

The talks build on the June 26 U.S.–brokered three‑party framework agreement that links any Israeli pull‑out to the disarmament of Hezbollah. Aoun argues that only Trump has the leverage to compel Israel to comply, while the Lebanese presidency emphasizes restoring full sovereignty and stabilising the cease‑fire. Israeli troops remain in a 10‑km “security zone” despite a lack of a set timetable for withdrawal, and Hezbollah has publicly rejected the disarmament provisions.

Aoun’s visit also includes briefings on Lebanon’s internal reforms, economic recovery, and coordination with the United States on security and humanitarian assistance, underscoring the broader regional importance of a lasting peace between Lebanon and Israel.
