Israel airstrikes in southern Lebanon kill at least 11 people
Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon have killed at least 11 people and injured 19 others, marking the deadliest single-day toll since a June truce was established. The strikes targeted the Nabatieh district, specifically the communities of Ansar and Deir ez-Zahrani.
In Ansar, seven people were killed, including three children and two women. The Israeli military reported that the strike targeted a Hezbollah headquarters and killed a senior commander, Ali Samir al-Hajj Hassan, asserting that the commander’s family was present but were not the intended targets. Israel alleged that Hezbollah used the family as human shields. In Deir ez-Zahrani, four people were killed and 17 others were injured.
The attacks followed an incident in which three Israeli soldiers were injured by Hezbollah. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hezbollah of violating the existing ceasefire. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the strikes, characterizing them as a clear message sent ahead of upcoming US-sponsored negotiations scheduled for early September in Rome.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the strikes, describing them as violations of Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity. The escalation occurs amid broader regional tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran.
