Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has announced that recent negotiations in Rome between Lebanon and Israel have shown "positive progress" regarding border security and the return of prisoners. The discussions focused on four primary pillars: a ceasefire, the demolition of homes, prisoner exchanges, and the identification of pilot areas to implement a framework agreement.
However, significant hurdles remain. Israel has reportedly linked the release of 35 Lebanese prisoners to demands for information regarding the missing Israeli navigator Ron Arad and the remains of Lebanese Jews from the civil war. Lebanese officials have described these requirements as "impossible."
Simultaneously, discussions are underway regarding the potential transfer of Hezbollah's heavy weaponry to the Lebanese army. While light and medium arms might temporarily remain with the group, the future of its arsenal remains undecided.
On the ground, tensions remain high. UNIFIL reported a surge in military activity, including 113 shells and missiles fired by the Israel Defense Forces into southern Lebanon in a single day, marking a significant escalation since the recent framework agreement was signed.
