Lebanon and Syria discuss reconnecting railway lines to link Port of Tripoli
Technical delegations from Lebanon and Syria have conducted field inspections and meetings to advance a project to reconnect the railway lines between the two countries. The initiative aims to link the Port of Tripoli to the Syrian railway network via the Akari station in Syria, extending toward Homs.
During the site visits, the Syrian delegation expressed positive feedback regarding the condition of the railway lines at the Port of Tripoli, though final suitability remains subject to technical testing by consultants. Syrian officials noted that differences in rail gauges between the two networks do not present technical or operational obstacles to the connection.
The next phase of the project will focus on completing technical studies of the route, determining expected freight volume, assessing economic feasibility, calculating costs, and identifying funding sources. If proven feasible, the project could enhance Tripoli's role in regional trade and potentially serve as part of a broader regional logistics corridor.
