Lebanon and Syria pursue economic reforms with IMF and World Bank
In Lebanon, Finance Minister Yassin Jaber met with Federico Lima, the resident representative of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), for a farewell visit. The discussions focused on the progress of financial reforms, the development of financial procedures, and legislative steps within the banking and financial sectors. Jaber emphasized that the government remains committed to completing necessary economic and banking reforms to restore confidence in the Lebanese economy, despite challenges such as the ongoing financial crisis and regional security instability.
In Syria, Finance Minister Mohammad Yasser Barnieh held talks with a World Bank delegation led by Dalia Khalifa, the new Director for the Mashreq region. The meeting addressed supporting financial reform programs and sustainable development through existing grants. Key topics included improving the governance and competitiveness of state economic institutions, digital transformation in financial sectors, and restructuring government financial entities.
The discussions in Syria also covered social protection strategies, pension system reforms, and the development of real estate financing. Additionally, the parties explored initiatives related to the recovery plan, including supporting the voluntary return of displaced persons and improving the investment climate.
