Lebanon-Syria economic and financial reform efforts

Lebanon and Syria have engaged in high-level discussions focused on economic cooperation, trade, and financial reform involving international institutions.

Initially, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam met with economic representatives to discuss strengthening commercial and investment ties with Syria. The talks aimed to facilitate trade exchange, joint investments, and Lebanese exports through Syrian transit, while also exploring cooperation in the energy and transport sectors. During this period, the World Bank also met with Lebanese officials to align project portfolios with government priorities in energy, water, and social protection, specifically regarding infrastructure rehabilitation.

Subsequent discussions expanded to include broader financial reforms with international organizations. In Lebanon, the Finance Minister met with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to discuss progress on banking and financial sector legislation. Simultaneously, Syrian officials met with World Bank representatives to address financial reform programs, the governance of state economic institutions, and digital transformation. These Syrian discussions also encompassed social protection strategies, pension reforms, and initiatives to improve the investment climate and support recovery plans.
