Lebanese President Joseph Aoun seeks Greek support for Israel peace deal
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun visited Athens to seek Greek assistance in implementing a US-sponsored framework agreement with Israel. The agreement, signed in late June, aims to end hostilities through the disarmament of Hezbollah, the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, and the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces to the region.
Aoun emphasized that the pact must be implemented in its entirety by both sides rather than unilaterally. He stressed that the Lebanese people are exhausted by war and that stability depends on the simultaneous withdrawal of foreign troops and the establishment of full state sovereignty.
During the visit, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis reaffirmed Greece's support for Lebanon's sovereignty, independence, and unity. He pledged assistance for the Lebanese Armed Forces and reconstruction efforts. This diplomatic push follows a period of intense conflict that has resulted in over 4,300 deaths and 12,000 injuries in Lebanon, alongside the destruction of dozens of villages.
